"The Association was first formed in 1981 to recognize legal assistants for the independent work they performed. Senior legal assistants, with their vast knowledge and experience, filled an important support role performing legal services as paralegals."

INDEPENDENT PARALEGALS
- We conduct business with integrity within and outside of the legal profession.
- We conduct ourselves in accordance with the laws of Alberta and Canada.
- We at no time represent ourselves to a client or any person as lawyers.
- Our marketing material does not in any way indicate or infer that we are lawyers and we do articulate the role of independent paralegals in our Retainer Agreements.
- We provide information and not legal advice to our clients.
- We uphold our duty to hold in strict confidence all information acquired in the course of the professional relationship concerning the business and affairs of our clients and uphold and highly esteem confidentiality unless expressly authorized by our clients or are required by law to do so.
- We acknowledge the duty owed to our clients to observe all relevant rules and laws regarding the presentation and safekeeping of the property of any client entrusted to us.
- Our conduct towards our clients and other members of the legal profession is characterized by courtesy and good faith.
- We work in a conscientious, diligent, and efficient manner and provide a service at least equal to that which our peers generally would expect of a competent Member.
- We discharge our duties with honesty and integrity. We do not act or continue to act for a client where there is a conflict of interest, personally or professionally.
- We maintain membership status in good standing when representing ourselves as independent paralegals.
